Introduction to Reading at Rodborough Extending Reading Experiences Students are introduced ro reading expectations and taught how to use their Reading Journal and the Accelerated Reader programme. In the second half term, students extend their reading experiences through the Remembrance Reading Challenge where they read fiction, non-fiction, poetry and learn the 'Ode to Remembrance' by heart. Reading experiences are extended through the October half term and Christmas reading challenges. |
Expanding and Extending Reading Habits Students embed the reading routines and expectations whilst developing independence and choice within reading experiences. Students develop their reflective reading skills by expressing responses to their reading and taking part in 'book talk' activities. Students are gifted a book and challenged to read the book in a given time frame and to share their responses. Students read non-fiction texts reflecting on and responding to this reading. Reading experiences are extended through the February half term and spring break reading challenges.

Leaders in the Library Reflective Reader; Reflective Responses students continue to develop the skills and behaviours of successful readers. Students evaluate their reading behaviours and identify areas for development. They read for empathy and consider the idea of books and 'windows, mirrors, doors.' They become part of a reading community sharing their reading and making reading recommendations. Reading experiences are extended through the half term and summer reading challenges.

Reintroduction to Reading at Rodborough Extending Reading Experiences Students review the reading expectations and the importance of reflecting on reading. They study war poetry and read some fiction and non-fiction on the theme of wartime. Reading experiences are extended through the October half term and Christmas reading challenges. |
Expanding and Extending Reading Habits This term embeds reading routines and expectations whilst supporting independence and choice within students' reading experience. It seeks to develop the skills required to be a reflective reader who seeks out reading experiences for pleasure. Students work to develop positive reading habits including reading widely, engaging and reflecting on personal reading experiences, expressing reading preferences and sharing reading experiences. Reading experiences are extended through the February half term and spring break reading challenges.

Developing Reading Stamina and Engagement Students work to increase reading stamina through a 'Reading Triathlon' involving reading both fiction and non-fiction texts. In lessons, students engage in a minimum of twenty minutes sustained silent reading. They read for empathy and start to identify 'empathy encounters' in their reading material. They develop skills of reflection and confidently express personal responses as part of a reading community. Reading experiences are extended through the half term and summer reading challenges

Our Year 9 reading curriculum builds on our existing and well-established strategies to promote reading for pleasure. Our students continue to benefit from a designated reading lesson once a week. These Year 9 reading lessons are also used as an opportunity to develop a representative reading curriculum for all students as, throughout Year 9, students read and discuss the topical issues, themes, perspectives and ideas that feature in the diverse fiction novels on the Year 9 reader curriculum. These texts are shared on a rotation basis across out seven Year 9 reading classes. |
